Hand-cut arch work

Traditional hand cutting is still required to produce the intricate shapes and profiles for 'rubbed & gauged brickwork'. This style of brickwork reached the height of popularity in the late 1800's. This highly skilled work is still undertaken at Bulmer using fully washed rubbers produced from the soft red London bed clays that are still quarried, moulded and fired on this site.

Timber templates are cut to shape either by hand or using modern laser technology. The blocks are 'bedded & squared' and cut to a perfect rectangular block (ashlars). Each block is then hand cut with a bow saw & twisted wire blade in the traditional way. The brick profile is finished with fine abrasive papers. Your order is then packed on trays, which are ideal for easy handling on site and ready for delivery.

For modern materials, diamond technology has enabled fast economic cutting and profiling methods to be developed. Curved shapes can be cut into all but the hardest brick materials.
